Float-charging or trickle-charging occurs when a battery is recharged at a rate equal to the speed in which it discharges.
In the case of sealed lead acid alarm batteries, it refers an alarm control panel's ability to continuously recharge its backup battery at the same rate as the battery naturally discharges. Alarm system backup batteries, like the UltraTech UT-1240 and UT-1270, are connected to an alarm control panel by red and black wire leads. During a power outage, the backup battery automatically engages and provides power to the security system. However, most of the time, it's the other way around. The control panel provides the battery with a steady stream of power to make up for the battery capacity that is naturally lost over time. This process is extremely important for alarm system backup. The reason being that when a power outage occurs, it's always in the user's best interest and safety if the backup battery is full-charged and ready to support the power needs of its security system.
