How does a carbon monoxide detector work?

Carbon monoxide detectors use a CO gas sensing cell housed internally within the device that is able to monitor low and high levels of carbon monoxide in the air. When dangerous carbon monoxide levels are reached, the detector's siren is triggered. Detectors can work as stand-alone units, like the Macurco CM-6, or even be integrated into a residential or commercial alarm system, like the CO1224T detector. Detectors often come equipped with a button that lets users test to see if the device is functioning properly. Detector lifespans can range depending on the model. For instance, the 260-CO Detector can last 10 years without replacement, but the 250-CO only lasts 6 years. Either way, LED indicators will alert users when the battery is low and/or a detector has reached the end of its service life.
